How you become a licensed barber in Florida

According to the Florida Barbers' Board, you become a licensed barber by completing 900 hours at a Florida barbering school and passing the state exam. There is also a restricted barber license that requires 600 hours. Florida does not use apprenticeship as a path to a full barber license. See the state's barber FAQ for current rules: https://www2.myfloridalicense.com/barbers/faqs/

So what is a shop "apprentice" job?

When a shop posts an apprentice or assistant opening, it usually means a learning role around the shop for a student or newly licensed barber: assisting, shadowing, keeping stations clean, and building speed under experienced barbers. You may only cut hair for pay where your license allows. Ask the shop exactly what the role includes.

Why take one

You learn how a busy shop runs, pick up techniques, and get introduced to clients. Many shops move strong apprentices into a chair once they are licensed.
